For some reason the speakers completely lock out in Leopard, I can’t use the remote to change volume My biggest problem though is when I use my Apple Bluetooth keyboard to try and change volume, the volume changes in the built in speaker of the display.

Logitech likes to announce CES products before the show begins, so we got an advance look at the company's newest 2.1 PC speaker system, the Z Cinema, and we're happy to report that it didn't disappoint. The Z Cinema comes with a heavy-duty remote whose tons of options are likely to excite those who have extensive media collections on their PCs but might scare someone looking for a simple, no-frills two-channel speaker set: It will definitely take you some time and effort to master the remote. The Z Cinema specializes in accessing media from a variety of sources via remote. It's not seamless—and the included Logitech software, while fun to use, can seem a bit intrusive when it pops up on your display every time you make a change. Regardless, the Z Cinema packs an impressive sonic delivery, with or without the SRS TruSurround HD effect activated.
The two satellite speakers measure 4.2 by 5.6 by 8.5 inches; the large subwoofer, 7.7 by 10.4 by 13.1. The Z Cinema accepts two types of inputs: USB and 3.5mm (for portable media players). Sidebars for windows 7 free download 2012. A headphone jack, just above the aux input on the right speaker, allows for private listening. The black-and-gray design is certainly alluring, particularly the embedded volume and power graphics on the right-hand speaker that disappear when the system is turned off. Unlike the previous Z-10 system , these speakers are not touch sensitive—you'll need the remote to operate them. And this thing looks as if it should be controlling a serious, high-end stereo system, not a set of PC speakers. The integration of Windows Media Center controls and the ability to access just about any media on your computer makes for a lot of buttons. For a system that attempts the daunting task of controlling all your PC media through one piece of software and one remote, the operability is surprisingly straightforward, but it's not without a few issues.
The skill of navigating different media libraries on your PC through the Logitech Z Cinema software is a little difficult to pick up. Eventually, I caught on, but I found learning how to play, pause, and select music from iTunes or Windows Media Player (WMP) in the Logitech interface a bit hairy. At one point, I had trouble getting a WMP file to stop playing, and at another, I somehow inadvertently locked the volume on the remote so I couldn't adjust it. The remote has so many options that mistakes like these are likelihoods for first-time users, and the wheel is so easily tripped that you will certainly change the volume by accident once or twice. These problems, like those with any tech that takes learning, will eventually disappear. But the Z Cinema is not for the hands-off crowd whose main priority is ease of use. You need to read the manual.

If you're willing to stick it out and learn the system, you'll undoubtedly love it. The Z Cinema sounds awesome, and accessing your PC media library without using the mouse and keyboard feels revolutionary (even if it isn't). The two satellites combine for a total of 70 watts RMS, delivered via two tweeters and two 'mid-woofers,' known everywhere else simply as woofers. You can adjust the bass levels (read: subwoofer levels) and treble levels via the remote, using the volume wheel and the enter button. With the SRS TruSurround HD effect off, you'll likely want the treble adjusted slightly higher than the low end. Why? Because, in my estimation, this surround effect does little more than add volume and treble to the signal. Will it sound as if the speakers are further apart? To some people, perhaps. Will it sound as if you just boosted the treble when you turn the effect on? For sure. In my testing, I arrived at this simple conclusion: for music, leave SRS off, and for movies, it sounds better on. When it's off, boost the treble a bit.
Those looking for maximum rumble from a subwoofer may not be satisfied. It's not that the Z Cinema's sub doesn't deliver deep bass, it's just that Logitech knows how to make good speakers, and part of that involves honoring the resonant low-end frequencies by not boosting them until they are a mushy, overpowering mess. The bass is definitely present in tunes like 'Black Mirror' by Arcade Fire (a very low-end heavy song), it's just not likely going to rattle the frames off your walls or upset your stomach or the balance of the mix. (Of course, subwoofer placement is everything when it comes to preserving the hanging decoration of your house.)
The included Logitech software will wow you with its fun graphics that form borders along the PC screen, allowing you to see other programs in the center. The software disappears when not in use but has a knack of appearing every time you press a button (which can be irksome if its windows happen to hide something you need to access on your desktop).
Gripes about the software are negligible. Using the Z Cinema just requires some effort. Folks who want a wide, cinematic scope from their speakers without all the remote-control fuss may be more interested in something like the Bose Companion 5 speakers , though they're not necessarily intended for PCs. The Z Cinema isn't for technophobes, but it is a well-equipped 2.1 PC speaker system, with a feature-heavy remote and strong musical output, along with some low-end rumble for movies and games. Sure, $300 isn't cheap, but it's a fair price for what you get. Besides, you get the added bonus of feeling good about yourself once you master that remote.
